Holding The Human: Live Performance + Q&A

Helen Dewhurst | Making Space

Events & Talks (16 October 2025, 6.15pm - 7.30pm)
Fabrica’s Making Space residency for October 2025 has been awarded to artist Helen Dewhurst, who is currently developing a spatial sound installation ’Songs of Borderlands’. As part of the residency, Helen is inviting a small audience into the gallery to experience the installation, alongside a short, live-sound performance and discussion.

Through sound, space and collective listening, Helen is exploring how we might attend to experiences of grief and loss together, and how art can offer forms of care, resistance and recognition, bearing witness in the face of vulnerability.

During the residency Helen is working with her spatial sound composition Songs of Borderlands, and sound producer/musician Jack Kingslake, to create an immersive sculptural-sound environment that visitors can feel and hear.

The work responds to the lives lost at sea in small boat crossings - a global crisis in which many die without trace, ceremony, or identity - and acts as a sonic memorial to those who have perished along migration routes.

The performance focuses on how listening can be experienced through the whole body, opening up sensory and collective experiences. As part of the event, attendees will be invited to engage with physical sound objects, experiencing how sound can be felt as much as heard, and asked to reflect on themes of grief, shadow and resilience.

Following the performance, there will be an opportunity to reflect on experiences and thoughts about the work with Helen and Jack via a Q&A, and respond to further questions posed by Helen about the possibilities for developing empathy through social listening.

Ahead of the event on Thursday 16 October, the work-in-progress installation will be open to visitors from 3-5pm. Free entry, no booking required.
