Tokyo Godfathers (2003 / 1h 28m / Rated 12A)
Satoshi Kon’s Tokyo Godfathers is a funny, moving and unexpectedly heartwarming festive adventure that follows three people living on the margins of society: Miyuki, a teenage runaway; Gin, a middle-aged alcoholic; and Hana, a transgender woman and former drag queen. As they navigate Tokyo’s bustling streets in search of the baby’s parents, a series of chance encounters, strange coincidences and unexpected revelations brings each of their troubled pasts to the surface. Blending sharp humour with genuine tenderness, this acclaimed anime explores family, belonging and the possibility of second chances - reminding us that sometimes the most unlikely people can become a family.
A film by Japanese animation director Satoshi Kon (Paprika, Perfect Blue) and co-written by Keiko Nobumoto (Cowboy Bebop), also featuring a whimsical score by Keiichi Suzuki.
