What happens when a group of renegade map-makers put Whitehawk at the centre of the world?
Artist Dan Thompson attempts to answer this question through his new artwork for Wellsbourne CIC and Fabrica, Three Tenses: The Whitehawk Great Map.
Inspired by the idea that maps shape the way we see the world, this new commission will explore Whitehawk’s past, present, and future through the eyes of its young people. Working together with the artist, they will uncover hidden histories, seek out everyday moments of hope, and reimagine their place in the world—culminating in a giant, multi-media Mappa Mundi where everything revolves around Whitehawk.
Funded by a 2025 Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award (ARMA), activities will take place over the summer in Whitehawk - more information will follow soon.
A touring exhibition presenting Three Tenses: The Whitehawk Great Map and three other ARMA commissions will follow in late 2025 and into 2026.
The Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Awards (ARMA) are a unique opportunity for collaborative learning between artists, visual arts engagement specialists, and teachers/educators to develop innovative creative practices that support the wellbeing and resilience of young people.
Following a national call for proposals, four organisations have been selected to host an ARMA 2025 artist commission:
Oriel Davies, Powys
Fabrica, Brighton
Dundee Contemporary Arts
20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Scunthorpe
The Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award (ARMA) was established in memory of the artist Alexandra Reinhardt and is supported by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust. The annual award funds an artist or artists to conceive and deliver a project that engages children and young people.
The 2024-2025 Award is focused on supporting the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education, has been working with the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust on the programme since 2012.
This project is led by Fabrica, in partnership with Wellsbourne Healthcare CIC, and supported by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust.
